RACE ETIQUETTE GUIDELINES

The following constitutes "Sportsmanlike conduct"

In an effort to maintain mushing's profile as a "FAMILY" recreational activity that can be enjoyed by  all ages, we feel we need to actively encourage mushers to take responsibility for the behavior of their dogs on the trail and off.

Good etiquette requires responsible action by each member and is necessary for the safety of both dogs and drivers. A safe run with courteous participants makes for an enjoyable sport for all. Beginners are entitled to the same courtesy on the trail as the veteran driver - help them learn good sportsmanship from your example. A musher who sacrifices good sportsmanship for a win does not belong on the trail.

However, acknowledging that some mushers may act irresponsibly, enforcement guidelines have been set to insure that all incidents are handled as fairly and impartially as possible. Unsportsmanlike conduct should be protested in order for proper disciplinary action to be taken.  Disciplinary action can not be taken without a written protest.

  1. No loose dogs allowed at any time.
  2. Spectators should not bring pets to a race even on a leash. Mushers should advise any guests not to bring pets.
  3. Mushers may not walk dogs on a leash during racing hours (10:30 am to 4:00 pm Saturdays, and 9:30 am to 2:00 pm Sundays). Except for dogs harnessed for an event.
  4. A musher shall not put his dogs on a picket line and then leave the race site (example: to go to town to get something to eat).
  5. Parking:
    a.  Do not block right-of-ways.
    b.  Always park in same spot both days.
    c.  Respect your fellow mushers space needs - ask if in doubt.
  6. Racetime etiquette:
    a.  Introduce yourself to mushers around you to see if they will need any assistance, also this is a good time to seek help from them if you need it. Don't wait until five minutes before you are supposed to be in the starting chute to find someone to help you get to the line!!!
    b.  Make yourself available for help during race.
       1.  Trail help is always needed and welcomed, remember those who were trail help during your class could use your help during their class.
       2.  Chute help is always needed and welcomed.
       3.  Help teams to and from the start and finish.
       4.  Keep parking area and dog area clean and dispose of garbage and dog droppings properly (in dumpster if available or take with you).
  7. A dog bite is a serious offense and should always be reported to the Race Marshall. A written protest allows the Race Marshall to take appropriate action to ensure the safety of participants and spectators alike.

Protests resulting in disciplinary action will be printed in The Sled Hauler.
